Tips to Staying Warm While Camping in the Winter

A Sleeping Bag is the simplest and easiest way to stay warm when cold weather camping. Although sometimes depending on the temperature a sleeping bag isn’t going to be able to keep you completely warm without some help. There are many ways to help with this issue. So, here are some simple tips to help you stay warm in and out of the tent.

1. The Water Bottle Method

  • This is a simple and effect trick to warm your Sleeping bag quickly.
  • Boil a pot of water.
  • Place a bottle of water in the pot for 3-5 minutes.
  • Place the bottle inside the sleeping bag at the bottom and let it heat your bag approximately 15-20 minutes prior to you getting in.

2. Stuff Extra Clothing in your Sleeping Bag

Another simple way to help stay warm in your sleeping bag. Pack the extra space in your sleeping bag with your clean clothes. This removes the dead air and allows your sleeping bag to heat faster. Sounds weird, but don’t wear your extra clothes! As your sleeping bag uses your body heat to warm the bag. If you are covered with layers your body heat will not be able to warm the sleeping bag and you’ll be colder through the night.

3. Grab an Electric Blanket/Heating Pad

Taking a heated blanket/pad seems like a cheat, but it can be a real lifesaver. You can easily stuff one in your bag with you to stay warm and cozy all night. There great to have around camp too, if you’re just sitting out talking, being able to have that direct heat on so you enjoy those talks just that much more.

4. Break a Sweat!

Sounds strange, but doing a small work out and then going straight to bed will have you feeling nice and warm for the next 30 minutes or so, that way you can fall asleep warm. Do a small set of push-ups, jumping jacks and a quick jog around the campfire and you’re ready to fall asleep all nice and warm!

5. Getting a 0°F Sleeping Bag

There are so much more tips and tricks, but I thought these were a good basic start. Camping in the Winter can be a real crap trip if you’re not properly prepared.
